When to Visit Egypt

The ideal time to explore Egypt is from October to April, when the weather is cooler and more enjoyable for visiting its vibrant cities, vast deserts, and historic tombs. The summer months, from May to September, can be excessively hot. in mind that if you during Ramadan (the dates vary each year), it's important to be respectful as Egypt is a predominantly Muslim country Eating or drinking in public places is discouraged, and cafes and restaurants may alter their operating hours. The conclusion of Ramadan is celebrated with Eid al-Fitr, a three-day festival marking the end of fasting. Personally, I love visiting Egypt in February and March, as it offers a pleasant escape from the chilly winter back home. You can expect clear skies and sunny weather in the southern region, which also boasts the highest concentration of Ancient Egyptian sites.

Essential tips for organizing your vacation in Egypt.

What language is spoken in Egypt?:

Modern Standard Arabic serves as the official of Egypt, but you will primarily hear the Egyptian dialect, which is a colloquial form that features distinct vocabulary and pronunciation. Although various Arab countries have their own dialects, Egyptian Arabic is widely understood due to the popularity of Egyptian cinema and soap operas throughout the region. All the guides are proficient in English to varying extents, and you should be able to communicate with drivers, market vendors, and other service workers in larger cities and towns. However, in Upper Egypt, away from major tourist areas, souqs, and hotels, English may not be commonly spoken.

What's the currency of Egypt?

The currency used in Egypt is the pound (LE or EGP), which is subdivided into 100 piastres (PT). Banknotes are available in denominations of LE5, LE10, LE20, LE50, LE100, and LE200, while coins come in LE1, PT50, and PT25. Credit cards are accepted in hotels and larger restaurants and shops, but widely elsewhere. ATMs are available in most major towns, and you can exchange foreign currency for Egyptian pounds at various bank branches and Forex outlets.

What food and drink should I try in Egypt?

Discover the rich flavours of Egypt, where traditional dishes like falafel, hummus, kofta, and flatbread await. For a unique culinary experience, don't miss out on Nubian food in the south, featuring delicious options like bamia, an aromatic okra stew, and kushari, a hearty lentil and chickpea dish, both cooked in traditional earthenware pots. While you're exploring, sample local brews like Stella or Saqqara Gold, and for a refreshing non-alcoholic option, indulge in sweetened tea infused with mint leaves or a refreshing cane juice.

How much should I tip in Egypt?

Tipping, known as baksheesh locally, is expected for almost any service given to you, and you should aim to tip 10–15% in restaurants on top of the standard service charge and VAT.

You should also tip guides, drivers, porters, and other service workers, even if the service given is very small. However, the amount depends on various factors, so we can provide you with specific guidance before you travel.

That said, some people will request a tip without even offering a service, such as approaching you and giving you advice or information without you requesting it. In these instances, we recommend that you say no to any unsolicited help and walk away.
