Casares

Time Stands Still Above the Sea

Time Stands Still Above the Sea

In the heart of the Costa del Sol lies Casares, a picturesque white village that seems to have been taken from an Andalusian tale. If you are looking for the perfect getaway to disconnect from the noise, enjoy uncrowded beaches, and immerse yourself in culture, this is the place for you.

At Zapholiday, we believe that every plan in Casares leaves a memory and every corner is a living postcard that would get likes even without WiFi. That’s why we present to you a guide on everything you can do in one of the most beautiful towns in the region.

**History of Casares: Fortresses, Blas Infante, and Moorish Heritage**

Casares is rich in history, boasting a blend of fortresses and a rare Moorish heritage. The town's history dates back to prehistoric times but took a significant turn during Roman times when Julius Caesar even visited in search of healing at the Baños de la Hedionda.

In the Middle Ages, Casares became a strategic fortress, serving as a watchpoint on the border between the Castilian and Moorish kingdoms. It was here that the important Pact of Casares was signed between Pedro I of Castile and Muhammad V of Granada—a true medieval summit! You don’t have to be a history buff to enjoy the castle; from its heights, you can see breathtaking valleys and the bay of Algeciras, alongside remnants of old walls and arches still standing the test of time.

**Casares: Birthplace of Blas Infante**

This charming town proudly claims to be the birthplace of Blas Infante, the father of Andalusian identity. His childhood home is now a museum, making it a great stop for the curious or those seeking inspiration for passionate Andalusian speeches.

**The Image of the White Village**

Wandering through the labyrinthine streets, surrounded by balconies overflowing with flowers and the Mudejar-towered church of the Incarnation, feels like stepping into a vintage Instagram filter made real.

**Casares Beaches and Natural Pools**

Casares is not just a mountain retreat; it also extends to the coast, featuring four distinct beaches. Playa Ancha stands out for its spaciousness and calm waters, ensuring comfort even for those who confuse sunscreen with mayonnaise. For pet lovers, Playa Piedra Paloma is a favorite among dogs. If you're up for an adventure, Playa Chica has pedestrian access only, while Playa de la Sal is perfect for those seeking a quiet beach experience.

Prefer freshwater? Just north of the village, the Manilva River creates enchanting natural pools, ideal for cooling off after a day of hiking.

**Baños De La Hedionda: Sulphurous Waters and Roman Legends**

The Baños de la Hedionda dates back to Roman times and is steeped in legend. One tale recounts how the apostle Santiago expelled the devil from the area, leaving behind a distinctive sulphurous smell. Another legend claims that Julius Caesar and his troops bathed here to cure scabies, leading him to commission the spa’s construction. Today, you can enjoy this unique location for free—while we can’t promise you’ll gain magical powers, we’re sure you’ll leave feeling rejuvenated.

**What to Do in Casares: Hiking, Paragliding, and Unforgettable Views**

Casares offers an array of outdoor activities, making it perfect for those who love hiking. Trails like Pico de las Hoyas or the path to Sierra de la Utrera provide stunning views of Gibraltar and the Serranía de Ronda, enticing you to return for more. For those seeking a thrill, paragliding is an option—Casares has a designated flying area and school to get your heart racing (though the views might make you scream!).

If these activities don't suit your fancy, consider horse riding through the mountains, visiting renowned golf courses, or simply strolling through the old town while enjoying tapas under the Andalusian sun.

The best times to visit Casares are spring and autumn to avoid the heat; however, if you prefer summer, you can easily blend beach time with other activities. Casares beautifully demonstrates how history, nature, adventure, and authenticity can coexist in a single destination. Whether you're planning a weekend retreat, a family vacation, or a romantic getaway, this is where you can create lasting experiences.
