Genalguacil is a charming white village of Arabic heritage, home to just over 400 inhabitants. It is located approximately 36 km from Estepona, in the picturesque Genal Valley at the heart of the Serranía de Ronda, within the Sierra Bermeja Natural Park, which rises to an altitude of 1,400 meters. From this vantage point, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views of the entire Costa del Sol, the Rock of Gibraltar, and, on clear days, even the coast of Africa.

**Museum Village**

Since 1994, Genalguacil has embraced a pioneering and innovative approach where art, culture, tradition, and nature converge. Through the Genalguacil Art Encounters, over 200 artists have contributed to transforming the village into a “forest of sculptures,” creating a unique identity that sets it apart from other municipalities.

In 2004, the Genalguacil Museum of Contemporary Art was established, housing the permanent collection of the Genalguacil Pueblo Museo. This museum hosts highly sought-after traveling exhibitions from both national and international artists, leading to Genalguacil being recognized as the only inhabited Museum Village in the world.

The village is particularly known for its Art Encounters, which take place every two years. During these events, international painters, sculptors, photographers, and ceramists collaborate with local residents. Art can be discovered in unexpected places throughout the village—on facades, roofs, corners, squares, and streets. Since the inception of the Art Encounters in 1994, more than 200 artists have left their mark on the village. Additionally, the Museum of Contemporary Art showcases works that cannot be displayed outdoors.

**Surroundings of Genalguacil**

The Genal Valley is a stunning landscape filled with forests and abundant water from numerous streams. Even in late summer, the rivers are cool and refreshing. The region is rich in flora, featuring firs, cork oaks, and chestnut trees. There are several ancient walking routes that connect the villages and lead to the rivers.

Most trails meander through lush forests of pines, oaks, and cork oaks, alongside plots of almond, olive, chestnut, and cherry trees, making for a pleasant experience during the summer months. Visitors can also discover many friendly Inns (“Ventas”) in the area, where they will be greeted with warm hospitality and delicious home-cooked meals. If time allows, it is highly recommended to stay at least one night to fully enjoy the surroundings.

The villages in the Genal Valley have retained their original layouts from a time long before cars existed, resulting in extremely steep one-way streets.
