**Comares: A White Village with Character**


Comares sits atop an impressive rock, offering panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and mountain ranges. This charming village in the Axarquía region is known for its rich history, traditional architecture, and strong cultural identity. Daily life here revolves around the production of olive oil, wine, and almonds—industries that have supported the local economy for generations.


**A Village with a Moorish Past**


The narrow, winding streets of Comares showcase its Moorish origins. White houses adorned with wrought-iron window grilles and colorful flower pots create a picturesque setting. Its strategic location once served as a lookout point, evident today in the historical remnants of the fortress and Maxmúllar Hill. The Aljibe, an ancient Moorish water reservoir, was designated a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931.


**Landmarks and Heritage**


Comares acts as an open-air museum for those who appreciate history and architecture. The Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation, built in the 16th century in the Mudéjar style, stands as one of the village’s cultural highlights. The harmony between nature and architecture is reflected in the way some houses are partially built into the rocks.


**Crafts and Traditions**


The village is famous for its handmade traditional garments. Notably, the intricately decorated hats worn by 'verdiales' dancers are a signature product of Comares. This ancient musical heritage remains vibrant today, with local 'verdiales' groups employing a fixed combination of instruments, including the violin, guitars, tambourine, cymbals, and lute. Each group is led by a "mayor," who coordinates the performances.


**Taste the Local Cuisine**


Comares also boasts a rich culinary tradition. Local specialties such as gazpachuelo, a creamy fish soup, and puchero, a hearty stew, are favorites among residents. The local wines and olive oil add an authentic touch to each dish.
