Where Mountain Tranquility Meets Mediterranean Blue

Where Mountain Tranquility Meets Mediterranean Blue

Ojén is situated 10 kilometres north of Marbella, within the Sierra de las Nieves district. Despite its small size, the town has historical significance; it was referenced in chronicles concerning the Mozarabic rebellion against the Emirate of Córdoba in the early 10th century and gained prominence during the Reconquest of Spain. In the 19th century, mining activities contributed to the town's development, and it even had a railway line to transport ore to the quay in Marbella. Now, let’s explore what you can see and do in the charming town of Ojén.

**What to See When Visiting Ojén**

The white lime that coats the walls of the houses in Ojén, one of the many picturesque white villages of Andalusia, creates a stunning visual contrast against the green slopes of the Malaga coastline, located just a few kilometres away. Ojén's prime position at the entrance to the Sierra de las Nieves makes it a must-see destination while visiting the Costa del Sol.

Life in Ojén is vibrant, especially during the Ojeando Festival, a prominent indie music event in Andalusia that attracts top Spanish independent rock artists. Several stages are set up throughout the village centre, infusing life and personality into this small town filled with esteemed performers.

Another highlight in Ojén is the Castillo del Cante Flamenco Festival, one of Spain's key flamenco events. Beyond these major festivals, there are several monuments and points of interest worth exploring in Ojén. Grab your pen and paper; here are some key attractions:

**Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación**

The Church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación is one of Ojén’s main monuments. This single-nave church, dating back to the 16th century, is notable for its white exterior and its tower, which incorporates the minaret of an old mosque. The church is located in one of the village's main squares, and its clock was crafted by the same artisans who built the famous clock at Puerta del Sol in Madrid.

**Fuente de los Chorros**

Adjacent to the church is the Fuente de los Chorros (Fountain of the Jets), constructed in brick in 1905 and featuring five water spouts.

**Ojén Caves**

The caves in Ojén are among its most unique attractions. The area's distinctive karst terrain has sculpted the landscape, creating interesting formations such as these caves situated in the village's upper section. Originally used as animal shelters, the caves have since been renovated for cultural purposes and host small events and concerts. They also offer a beautiful viewpoint overlooking the village, mountain range, and the coast of Marbella.

**Olive Oil Mill Museum**

Ojén is home to a small but fascinating Olive Oil Mill Museum, showcasing a restored mill from 1800. The museum features original machinery that provides insight into the process of producing olive oil, often referred to as "liquid gold." Demonstrations of the functioning mill are conducted for visitors.

**Liqueur Museum**

On the upper floor of the Olive Oil Mill Museum, you will find the Liqueur Museum, dedicated to Ojén's most famous product. This building was once the last liqueur factory in town, and it houses one of the few remaining authentic bottles of Ojén liqueur. Although production was discontinued in 1974, efforts have been made to revive the original recipe created by Pedro Morales. Known as "Ojen" in the English-speaking world, this liqueur was exported to the Americas and is mentioned in works by notable artists such as Camilo José Cela, Rosalía de Castro, and Picasso. In Spain, the phrase “una copita… de Ojén” (a small glass of Ojén) refers to the seven-note musical call-and-response used as a door knock, similar to the phrase “shave and a haircut… two bits” in English-speaking cultures.
